Ongoing Programs

The WPNA administrates several important programs to help enrich our neighborhoods and improve our community.
  • General Meetings

General meetings are held on the third Tuesday of odd-numbered months. A social half-hour begins at 6:30 p.m. at which light refreshments are served. The meeting runs from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Location: Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1700 Westport Rd.
Meetings are being held via Zoom until further notice.

    Neighborhood Cleanup Events

Twice each year, we conduct Neighborhood Cleanup events, funded in part by the city of Kansas City. We provide an opportunity for neighbors to clean up their houses and yards, and at the same time, give the dozen or so volunteers and participating residents an opportunity to get to know each other as they work together to move the trash from neighbors’ vehicles into the dumpsters.

    PIAC

Each year the WNPA submits several beautification projects to Kansas City’s  Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC) often in coordination with surrounding neighborhoods such as Westwood and Volker. PIAC then makes recommendations to the city regarding funding of selected projects. Past improvements funded by PIAC in the West Plaza include new playground equipment and curb and sidewalk repair. Please submit your beautification ideas on our contact page!

For more information on the process of submitting improvement projects to PIAC, please see their website at: https://www.kcmo.gov/programs-initiatives/public-improvements-advisory-committee-piac

    Preservation & Development

This program started as a research committee to gather information regarding the need for an Overlay district in our neighborhood.  It came out of a great many developers buying our neighborhoods 100 year old homes and demolishing them and building things in there place that may or may not have “fit” in the neighborhood.  We developed it into a Task Force for communication between developers, home buyers who loved the location but the home didn’t work for their needs and neighbors of those properties.  We have established Common Interest Areas or CIA’s to divide the neighborhood into smaller sized areas and have a CIA Monitor (volunteer) who is the go to person for issues or building/code/zoning issues in that area.  We will add more information about those districts to the website as we get it published and fine tuned.  As always if you are looking for a volunteer opportunity and this Task Force looks good to you, reach out and we can get your involved.

    Senior Outreach

WPNA realizes that much of what has been created, sustained and advanced in our community has been because of the commitment of the families who have lived and worked here for many years. Because of that longevity, we are now experiencing an aging community of residents.  In that regard, the WPNA understands the importance of reaching out to our senior residents to determine how we can best support them at this time in their lives.  Whether that support is yard cleaning, snow removal or simple home repairs, our goal is to ensure that as a community, we support our senior residents in ways that matter most to them in their daily lives while also finding ways to prevent our neighbors and friends from becoming socially isolated.
To achieve this endeavor, we will begin identifying and gathering feedback from our senior residents to determine what they perceive as most important to them.  Then, with the help of community volunteers, determine how we can fill the gaps in meeting those needs.  If you are interested in becoming a WPNA senior support volunteer and show your appreciation for their years of service to this community, please use the “Contact Us” form on the website to get in touch with our Volunteer Coordinator.

    West Plaza Floral Garden

Volunteers created and now maintain the West Plaza Floral Garden, a small triangular park area at the intersection of 46th Street, Jarboe, and Roanoke Parkway, which is filled with flowering native plants. We encourage volunteers to participate in the weekly maintenance opportunities, a group planting in the spring, and a cleanup in the fall. For information about volunteering, contact Ed O'Donnell through the Contact Us page.

    West Plaza Watch

The West Plaza Watch Facebook Page is a vital communication tool for neighbors. We want neighbors to feel heard and be connected on matters of safety. In addition, the West Plaza Watch Facebook page encourages members to post about lost pets to help reunite pets and their families quickly.
In addition, we host trainings on organizing a Neighborhood Watch. Dates will be posted on the web page calendar and on Facebook. To learn more about being a part of a Neighborhood Watch, check out the National Neighborhood Watch page at: https://www.nnw.org/ .
We provide a column on safety issues and updated crime statistics in every newsletter. In addition, we are in regular communication with our KCPD Community Interaction Officer who regularly attends our general meetings.
To be an effective neighborhood watch, we need active support from all of our neighbors. Please check our calendar on the WPNA webpage or Facebook page for upcoming events.
